Residual current relay for monitoring leaks and ground faults in electrical installations

The operating principle of a leakage current relay is based on the fact that the vector sum of currents in the cable supplying any electrical consumer is equal to zero, provided that the electrical insulation of the power section of the electrical installation is intact. The presence of a non-zero total current, known as leakage current or residual current, indicates an insulation failure and is a fault signal. This can be caused by various reasons, ranging from aging insulation to touching a current-carrying part by a person or animal. Therefore, monitoring residual currents is essential for the safe operation of electrical equipment.
Leakage current is measured using a special transformer, through the window of which the entire supply cable is passed. The secondary winding of the leakage current transformer is connected to a relay, which responds to the appearance of a non-zero signal according to its preset program.
